
Alongside the store, I have a second job, leading a department that takes emergency calls for the police, so I work in the shop and then do 8pm-4am night shifts four times a week. On top of that, I have I have six-year-old twins and a five-year-old daughter, so I have to do a lot in terms of juggling work and children.
I’ve learned to prioritise and better understand what’s important.
In November 2023, I had a mini stroke – it was a wake-up call that I was doing too much. Now I’m more careful about what I commit to, and I recognise that I have to say no to certain things.
I recognise when my pot is about to overflow and choose to prioritise myself.

To do that, I plan things in advance. For example, if I know I have a big commitment, I ensure I’m not working in the shop the day before. I must admit, I’m able to do this because I have a fantastic manageress. We have an open line of communication with the team, letting them know what’s expected of them, with a detailed handover for every shift.
And with my kids, I make sure to spend quality time with each of them individually, even if it’s just a trip to the park. It’s all about planning.
