Staff development – Academy in Action 2021 follow-up

Academy in action follow-up

Each year as part of the IAA’s Academy in Action programme, we visit 10 independent retailers to help them make simple improvements in their stores in order to increase sales and profits.

IAA advice

1Define each role and responsibility to enable staff to take ownership

2Create a list of daily tasks, in order of importance to set expectations

3Create a formal review that includes a development and recognition plan

The results

“We spoke with staff about their aspirations which has boosted their motivation and we gave more responsibilities to those who envisaged taking on more senior roles. We informed staff we were going to define their duties, which has upped morale. We also created daily task lists for each shift for jobs like cleaning and organised them in order of importance. This has given staff clarity on expectations, and means they now complete these tasks more often and, as a result, 30% quicker.”

Brad Rogers, BAT UK
