Asif and Abada Akhtar’s store has created a true community hub in an in-need area of Scotland. They set up their own charity in memory of a customer and community-funded £4,000 so he could take his daughter to Florida. They give talks at local schools, have set up a breakfast club for local children and provide school uniforms to those who can’t afford them. To raise awareness of prostate cancer, Asif did a bungee jump for his 40th birthday, which proved effective. As a result, one local’s recent doctors visit resulted in early detection and an 85% survival rate.

Service to the Community 2018 Finalists:

  • Amrit Singh, Nisa Local High Heath, Walsall
  • Sonya Cary, Pontrilas Post Office, Pontrilas, Hereford
  • Asif & Abada Akhtar, Premier Smeaton Stores, Kirkcaldy, Fife
  • Trudy Davies, Woosnam & Davies News, Llanidloes, Powys
