Dee Sedani – Londis, Derby

Dee’s top tips

  • Don’t lose customers because you are always pestering them for ID. Have a system where they can register and be recognised straight away
  • Make sure your staff are fully trained on selling alcohol
  • Set up your CCTV so that staff can easily monitor what is going on at the back of the shop without taking their eye off the till

Dee Sedani, and his business partner Darren Bennett, have found a unique method for protecting themselves from the risk of mistakenly selling alcohol to a minor and the fine of up to £10,000 that could come with it.

It might sound like something out of a film like Minority Report, but Dee has installed fingerprint scanners on all of his tills so that customers don’t have to be caught out without ID. They register on the system once, and this means that registered customers without ID can simply scan their finger as proof of age.

The store’s location opposite the largest comprehensive in Derbyshire was the impetus for this move and for many under 18’s, knowing the system is in place is enough to discourage even attempting to buy age-restricted products.

Dee’s shop isn’t all about CCTV and futuristic technology though – he still upholds the traditional strong points of retailing with a clean well-presented and well-stocked store. Take a look for yourself below:
