Mark Smith’s store in Cornwall isn’t just a CTN – he also uses part of the space as a Games Workshop – if you’re not aware of Games Workshop, it’s a brand that sells action models for decorating and playing with. One of many innovations that saw Mark nominated in 2009′s Independent Achievers Academy.
“We have developed the business as a destination shop, which provides a fusion of ideas and events so the store is a focal point for the community. The result is the footfall to the store has increased and turnover by 33 per cent. In addition to a 14m magazine shelf we organise events like painting lessons for the community.
“Because our customers like to try new products we provide other samples, which also promotes products in the process. We like to support other local products and have recently started selling kettle crisps produced by the Cornish Crisp Company, located a mile away. We sell a reasonable amount of local produce.”
