Customer service should be more than just being friendly to your customers. Friendly staff who are a part of the local community both in and out of the shop are more likely to attract loyal customers. Just ask Paul Lucas.
“Over the last 18 months I have got to know my customers and feel like part of the community. There are plenty of pensioners locally and so I like to go out of my way to help them in various areas of their lives. This can involve something as simple as replacing a blown fuse or paying a bill for them. As a way of supporting the old aged in the community the store employs an elderly man on a part-time basis, which enables me to visit the local cash & carry when necessary.
“We also like to get involved with projects that affect the wider community. For example, we have collected petitions to prevent the closure of the local fire station.
“Sometimes we get local growers who have plots of land to supply us with vegetables and also sell milk from the community’s farmers. Our notice board plays an important role in the community and we advertise activities taking place and items for sale.”
