Terry & Melanie Philpott – Martin’s of Castle Cary, Somerset

Sustainability is an important aspect in any business. Just ask 2009 Environment & Sustainability IAA winners the Philpotts.

“We segregate our waste into three areas, which are paper and card for recycling, plastic and dirty waste for disposal. As a result of our programme we have reduced the amount of waste going into the landfill by at least 50 per cent.

“We also stock a wide range of local produce, which reduces food miles. We support the Shop Local campaign introduced by Friends of the Earth, which encourages customers to use local shops and reduce the journeys they make to other destinations.

“We now package smaller items in paper bags rather than reaching for a plastic carrier bag. The shop has also introduced a number of measures to save electricity, including reducing the number of lights switched on during non-trading times.”
