The environment is something that all of us, particularly in business, are thinking about more and more. As an integral part of the community, independent retailers are at the forefront of this. Whether it’s recycling batteries, providing bags for life, or reducing waste, retailers can make a difference. Aileen & Martin Lovell’s conscientiousness in this regard was something that saw them nominated in the 2009 IAA Awards for Environment & Sustainability.
“The environment is an increasingly important area. This year we have reduced the amount of plastic carrier bags by 40 per cent and now charge 4p per bag if customers require them. In doing so we are discouraging bag use, but also raising money for local good causes. We offer a cotton ‘bag for life’ for 99p or a robust Hessian bag, which is sold on behalf of the local school with all proceeds going to them.
“Our intention in the coming year is to invest in solar energy to reduce our reliance on the national grid. This year we have made our cardboard waste available to a customer who shreds and converts it into horse bedding. This significantly reduces the amount of waste collected.
“The store also supports local suppliers and products and makes arrangements to collect directly from the producer. We support the work of the Arrowvale Environment group who we help to promote on our web site, distributing energy efficient light bulbs and Hessian bags for life.”
