Brett Corder – Corder’s Budgens, Norfolk

Brett and Maria Corder of Corder’s Budgens, Norfolk, were finalists in both the Environment & Sustainability and Marketing to Customers categories at the 2009 IAA Awards.

This set of photos shows the Corder’s commitment to environmental initiatives including encouraging customers to reuse carrier bags and sourcing quality local produce to stock in store.

“18 months ago we started selling bio-degradable carrier bags, charging customers 2p and donating 1p to Barnado’s,” says Brett.

“Initially customers would ask questions about the change, but now they are used to paying and are very supportive. In our store we have a large notice board which informs customers and staff how much money we are raising for charity.

“We sell 12 local product lines and inform our customers how far each product has travelled to get into our shop. We recycle all cardboard and plastic, which is given to a local depot. The store has a recycling facility for old shoes which is used to produce tyres in under-developed countries. The recycling facility is proving very popular.”
