Andy Singh – Chapel Food Store, Newcastle

Andy Singh of the Chapel Food Store in Newcastle is constantly changing his store to make the most of new products and promotions. Despite this constant adaptation, he pays close attention to the key principles that made his store one of the finalists in the Shop Layout category of the 2009 IAA.

“Generally I try to create space and a browse factor, by ensuring clear aisles and signage,” he says.

“We also create clear sections for particular product types, to further enhance the visual impact in the shop. Seven years ago we widened the entrance doors and made them electronic and smoothed over the ramp to improve wheelchair access.

Cleanliness is very important, because it is the first thing that customers see when they enter the shop. The shop is cleaned everyday and the floor is swept and polished. I think a shop floor should have a shine to it to impress customers. A retailer should not have any fear if a trading standards officer was to visit at any time.”
