Upgrade your software or face being left in the cold

by Technology Corner on 5 February, 2010

You may think that it is just big companies that focus on their IT needs as a part of their business and security.  But we all have to keep our systems up-to-the-minute in order to protect our businesses and ourselves.

Google is phasing out support for Internet Explorer (IE) 6 following a series of sophisticated hacks on its networks that was sourced in China. Following the incident Google threatened to withdraw from the Chinese market entirely. The browser has some fundamental flaws that the hackers exploited.

I have always been a Firefox advocate but following these incidents the German and French governments began to agree with me, advising citizens to move to Firefox until IE closed the holes in its software.

A quick straw pole amongst my friends revealed a shocking (to me) 4 out of 5 still using the flawed browser. If you are caught unawares as an IE6 user you are especially susceptible to Trojan horse and other hacks that can take over your computer, thereby having complete access to your secure data.

There is also a growing community of web professionals, IE6 no more, calling for an end to the use of this now 8-year-old browser as it is holding back the capabilities of the internet.

If you are using Internet Explorer, check your version in the toolbar (Help > About Internet Explorer) and if you find you are using version 6 then I strongly advise you to upgrade to a new browser.

Click on any of the below to get your new browser right away!
