the better retailing blog
Retailers just twittering on
by Technology Corner on 18 December, 2009
Twitter is the big internet phenomenon of 2009. For the three people who use the web and haven’t heard of it, Twitter is a micro-blogging site that allows users to share their thoughts, links, and personalities with whosoever wishes to follow them, in 140 characters or less. You can find ours here.
But Twitter is also a powerful marketing tool and has allowed big corporations to create a personality that their fans or customers can appreciate and talk to in real time; however, it doesn’t just have to be for the big corporations, and the masses to share their thoughts. Twitter can be used for so much more. The potential for retailers to connect directly with their customers any time, any place, is absolutely huge.
Take AlbionsOven – a bakery in Shoreditch that use Twitter to announce when a fresh batch of croissants, or bread rolls, or whatever, has just come out of the oven. Customers who follow the bakery on Twitter know instantly that their favourite baked-goods are ready to buy and can get themselves there quickly. This works not just to drive customers into the store, but also spreads the popularity of the store as customers share with each other this quite unique marketing method.
Check back next Friday to see how Hopes of Longtown and Whitstable Shop use Twitter to build their business.
